I have posted the final draft of my (2010a) paper, Cypriot Antiquities Rescue from the Turkish Deep State: the Rescue of Forgeries, and the Death of Stephanos Stephanou, and I (2010b) have refuted the claims in Anonymous's (2010) paraphrasing of (at least, previously) TRNC Representative Küfi Seydalı.
Academic lies in Cyprus, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Britain and Germany
Without contacting me to fact-check, Near East University Prof. Dr. Ata Atun repeated Küfi Seydalı's opinions in a newspaper article. (Journalism is not Atun's only other profession: he has been an consultant or adviser of (nationalist) Democratic Party (Demokrat Partisi) and (nationalist) National Unity Party (Ulusal Birlik Partisi) politicians.(1))
Atun's professional article was published in Turkish Cypriot Açık Gazete, Kıbrıs Gazetesi, Kıbrıs Postası and Kıbrıs Rota Gazetesi; and presented in the Başaran Press and KKTC Medya, and on the Kıbrıs 1974 website (as well as on Ata Atun's own).
It was also published in Turkish Demokrat Mersin Gazetesi, Trakya Net Haber Gazetesi; and presented in Haber Cumhuriyeti, Haber TE, ROGG ve NOK Haber Merkezi, Samsun Haber [and Yeni Dünya Gündemi Gazetesi], and republished on Turkish journalist Ahmet Akyol's website; and in the Turkish Forum. [It has also been posted on the Turkish Ataturkist (Atatürkçü) Seeangel website.]
It has also been posted [by the Azerbaijani Baku Strategy Research and News Centre (Bakı Strateji Araşdırmalar və Xəbərlər Mərkəzi),] [in the German Turkish diaspora newspaper, Hür Yorum Gazetesi and] website Aytürk, and even in my local rag, British Turkish Cypriot Avrupa Gazetesi.
'... deliver your protests'
As I explained in my last blog post, Atun concluded that:
Artık organize olmamızın zamanı gelmiştir. Bizler de dünyaya kendi doğrularımızı anlatabilmeli ve onların önüne Kıbrıs'ın gerçeklerini sermeliyiz.But despite having unknown thousands of paper readers in four countries and countless online readers worldwide, I have only received one protest letter, and that was from Atun.

Sam Hardy's e-mail address is "[deleted]" and his thesis supervisor Prof. [deleted]'s e-mail address is "[deleted]". Please deliver your protests to these addresses and state that Sam Hardy's comments with regard to the Turkish Cypriots did not reflect the truths.]
As a friend observed, 'it means that people are more mature than [Atun] thinks they are'. But such misrepresentation could still put me and my work at risk. It could make simple things, like getting a visa to visit friends in Turkey, difficult or impossible. So I must correct Atun's claims.
Claims from Kıbrıs to Avrupa
As in my previous blog post about Anonymous/Küfi Seydalı's claims, I will reproduce the Turkish-language media attack, with [bracketed] notes marking the worst perversions of my words, and detailed corrections after.
Again, I will ignore the emotive language, like Atun's presentation of me as someone 'who told lies without blushing [yalanları yüzü kızarmadan da söyleyen]', or simply as someone silly, foolish, or stupid ('sersem'); I will instead focus only on its positive factual claims.
Viyana'da yaşayan kıymetli dostum Kufi Seydali'den bir yazı aldım dün. Kalbi Kıbrıs sevgisi ile dolu olan Kufi arkadaşım, Cumartesi günü BM'nin Viyana'daki merkezinde haftalık olarak düzenlenen konferanslardan birindeki Kıbrıs'la ilgili bölüme katıldığından ve o konferansta söylenen yalanlardan bahsediyordu.(I'm not confident of my translation of the final paragraph; but fortunately it's irrelevant.)
[Yesterday I received a letter from my dear friend Küfi Seydalı, who lives in Vienna. With my friend Küfi's heart full of love of Cyprus, he talked about having attended a paper concerned with Cyprus from a week-long conference organised at the UN's centre in Vienna, and the lies that were told at the conference.]

[This person made a veiled attack upon TMT and the Turkish Cypriot State, which were equated with an unidentifiable and mythical entity called "the Deep State", which was alleged to be responsible for all of the ills in Cyprus [absolutely false].]

[Later on he tried to create a mythical Greek hero, a Greek Cypriot police officer called Stephano [sic] Stephanou, who worked secretly and who had secretly entered Cyprus's north specifically to rescue a very old and valuable Bible.]

Steohanou [sic], however, was left deprived of his human rights and tortured to death by police connected with the Turkish Deep State [somewhat misleading].]

[My friend Kufi described this presentation as a masterpiece of political propaganda, which tried to hide from sight the attack that was made on the TRNC, and also made an effort to be shown to have distributed responsibility for this matter equally on both sides, in reality using an international scientific forum to present the TRNC as an illegal and criminal entity [absolutely false].]

[My friend Kufi asked this academic sweat-inducing questions, like how it [was] possible that the Turkish Cypriots squeezed into 3% of the island [were] able to loot all of the island's ancient sites [absolutely false], or who carried innumerable ancient artefacts belonging to Egypt, India and Cyprus to the "British Museum".]
Artık bizlerin de, Türkçe yazılar yazıp kendi kendimizi, "sağırlar, körler birbirini ağırlar" misali kandıracağımıza, dünya dili olan İngilizce ile yazılarımızı yazıp, haklı davamızı, Avrupa ve Amerika'daki ilgili kişi ve kuruluşlara bıkmadan usanmadan göndererek gözler önüne sermemiz ve savunmamız gerekmektedir.
[It is necessary now for us, Turkish writers to write on our own, to write our writings in English, in the language of the world, to persuade the examples of "the blind leading the blind", to display and defend, by tirelessly and ceaselessly showing, our rightful action the interested people and institutions of Europe and America.]
Ata Atun Anonymous?
One of the things that struck me, as I struggled to translate Atun's newspaper article, was how many paragraphs were precisely the same as those in Anonymous's forum post (give or take one or two words, where even those differences would be a false result of translation).
Either Prof. Dr. Ata Atun significantly copied and translated Anonymous's report without attribution; or Atun is Anonymous; but, if so, why didn't Atun put his name to the first, English-language attack?
Regardless, since the media claims are the same as those in the community forum, I can simply cite the corrections made in my previous blog post, "TRNC Representative Küfi Seydalı: a 'Masterpiece in Political Propaganda'?" (As for the "ethnic" - or, rather, bicommunal - nature of the illicit antiquities trade, see Cypriot museums' looted artefacts' acquisitions, 1961-1976.)
